OSRS Money-Making Methods in 2024: Tested and Ranked

Aug-02-2024 PST
Every year, RSgoldfast makes a few money making guides covering a variety of methods including skills, killing different NPCs, and taking down bosses. However, not everyone has the ability to take down bosses, or you just don't want to. There are so many different ways to make money that it's easy to get overwhelmed and lost in the sea of methods. Here, I've listed the hourly OSRS GP rates reported on each method, the rates I've personally received, the requirements for each method, and how AFK that method is, from 1 to 10. Let's jump right into the first method!

OSRS Money-Making Methods in 2024: Tested and Ranked

1. Smelting Cannonballs

Wiki Rate: 600k GP/hour

My Rate: 370k GP/hour

Requirements: Dwarf Cannon quest, 35 Smithing

AFK Scale: 10/10

Smelting cannonballs is an absolute classic. The listed rate assumes you have a double ammo mold from the Giants' Foundry minigame, which significantly boosts your output. The requirements are simple: complete the Dwarf Cannon quest and have 35 Smithing. With an ammo mold and an inventory full of steel bars, head to the best furnace you have access to, usually Edgeville. This method is highly AFK, allowing you to step away from your PC for minutes at a time. However, if you opt to get the double ammo mold, your GP per hour will double, but the method becomes less AFK.

2. Pickpocketing Elves

Wiki Rate: 2.5 million GP/hour

My Rate: 200k GP/hour

Requirements: 85 Thieving, relevant quests

AFK Scale: 2/10

Pickpocketing elves is a lucrative method locked behind a few big quests. You need 85 Thieving, but the higher your level, the better. The wiki rate is high because it assumes you obtain the rare Enhanced Crystal Teleport Seed drop, which sells for about 2 million GP. However, this drop is rare (1 in 1,000 pickpockets). Using a full Rogues' outfit, you can double the loot. Enhancements like Shadow Veil from the Arceuus spellbook and dodgy necklaces can improve your success rate. My actual rate was significantly lower because I didn't get the rare drop during testing.

3. Pickpocketing Vyres

Wiki Rate: 4 million GP/hour

My Rate: 250k GP/hour

Requirements: 82 Thieving, Sins of the Father quest

AFK Scale: 2/10

Similar to elves, pickpocketing Vyres relies on obtaining a rare drop, the Blood Shard (1 in 5,000 chance). With a full Rogues' outfit, you can double your loot. You will need the Sins of the Father quest completed and at least 82 Thieving. Using dodgy necklaces and the Shadow Veil spell can help reduce the damage you take and increase your success rate. My rate was lower because I didn't get the rare drop. You will take significant damage, so be prepared with food or prayer potions.

4. Killing Vyrewatch Sentinels

Wiki Rate: 950k GP/hour

My Rate: 50k GP/hour

Requirements: Sins of the Father quest, decent combat stats

AFK Scale: 10/10

Vyrewatch Sentinels offer a highly AFK method to obtain Blood Shards (1 in 1,500 chance). You need the Sins of the Father quest and at least 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee. Higher prayer and combat stats are recommended. Popular spots include Darkmeyer, where you can bank and use an altar to restore prayer. My rate was low because I didn't get a Blood Shard during testing. This method is very AFK and popular for those who prefer a laid-back approach.

5. Opening Crystal Chests

Wiki Rate: 1 million GP/hour

My Rate: 890k GP/hour

Requirements: Crystal keys

AFK Scale: 1/10

Opening crystal chests in Taverley requires crystal keys, which can be bought from the Grand Exchange. The method involves teleporting to your player-owned house set in Taverley, opening the chests, banking, and repeating. With 420 crystal keys, you can potentially make 1 million GP per hour. My rate was slightly lower due to RNG. This method requires constant attention, as you need to bank frequently.

6. Buying Monkey Nuts

Wiki Rate: 1.5 million GP/hour

My Rate: 1.4 million GP/hour

Requirements: Monkey Madness II quest, stamina potions

AFK Scale: 1/10

After completing Monkey Madness II, you can buy monkey nuts from a food stall on Ape Atoll. With stamina potions and some GP, you buy a full inventory, bank, and repeat. When the shop runs out of stock, hop worlds and continue. My rate was close to the wiki rate, making this a reliable method. However, it is very click-intensive and not AFK-friendly.

7. Buying Kegs of Beer

Wiki Rate: 1.4 million GP/hour

My Rate: 700k GP/hour

Requirements: Fremennik Isles quest, GP

AFK Scale: 1/10

This method involves buying kegs of beer from Thora in the Rellekka bar for about 450 GP each. You bank them using Peer the Seer, who acts as a deposit box. The method requires stamina potions and some GP for initial investment. My rate was significantly lower because I struggled to sell the kegs at the listed price. This method is also very click-intensive.

8. Casting Tan Leather

Wiki Rate: 1.2 million GP/hour

My Rate: 660k GP/hour

Requirements: Lunar Diplomacy quest, hard Fremennik Diary, 78 Magic

AFK Scale: 4/10

Casting Tan Leather on dragon hides requires the Lunar spellbook, 78 Magic, and completion of the hard Fremennik Diary. You will need a fire staff, astral runes, and nature runes. The method involves casting the spell on a full inventory of hides, banking, and repeating. My rate was lower because I chose to tan blue dragonhide, which requires less capital. This method is low-intensity but not entirely AFK.

9. Dismantling Bracelets of Ethereum

Wiki Rate: 1.1 million GP/hour

My Rate: 650k GP/hour

Requirements: GP for bracelets

AFK Scale: 1/10

Dismantling bracelets of ethereum involves buying them from the Grand Exchange, dismantling them into revenant ether, and selling the ether. The method requires significant capital and involves constant clicking and banking. My rate was lower due to the Grand Exchange tax and the need for high initial investment. This method is not recommended due to its click-intensive nature and high capital requirement.

10. Crafting Drift Nets

Wiki Rate: 800k GP/hour

My Rate: 600k GP/hour

Requirements: 26 Crafting, Bone Voyage quest

AFK Scale: 6/10

Crafting drift nets involves using jute fibers on a loom. The best loom is on Fossil Island after completing the Bone Voyage quest. The method involves running back and forth from the bank chest to the loom. My rate was lower but still decent for low-level players. This method is semi-AFK and good for beginners.

11. Killing Green Dragons

Wiki Rate: 900k GP/hour

My Rate: ---

Requirements: Combat skills

AFK Scale: ---

Green dragons are a classic money-making method. They can be found in several locations in low-level Wilderness. Killing them for their dragon bones and hides is profitable, but it requires combat skills and the willingness to risk venturing into the Wilderness.

These are just a few of the many money-making methods available in Old School RuneScape. Each method has its pros and cons, and your personal preferences and in-game goals will determine which methods work best for you. Whether you prefer highly AFK methods or more active ones, there's a money-making method out there that suits your playstyle, help you get more OSRS Gold and Items. Happy scaping!
