OSRS Sailing Skill
Dec-28-2023 PSTSailing is a new skill that will be released sometime around 2024. This skill will allow you to sail to different parts of the map, explore new areas, and unlock seafaring activities. The Sailing skill passes with an 80.9% poll percentage and is going to be the first skill that has been added to the game since 2013.
Is it True?
Yes, it is! Per the OSRS poll that took place on the 19th of August. The skill is being added to the game. The poll consisted of three proposals: Sailing, Taming, and Shamanism, with Sailing reaching the most votes. Many might’ve been skeptical at first, but with the dedication displayed by the OSRS team, the views of the players changed. August was a month to live in, honestly.
Release Date
The Sailing skill is set to release early in the year 2024 so that players can enjoy the benefits it brings alongside the joy of entering a new year. In case of any delays, the OSRS team will make sure to update you via their official wiki page.
What are its Mechanics?
Sailing is going to allow you to navigate through the seas to reach different parts of the cities within the game. It’ll be taking place in the main part of the world, which is the over world. As you navigate through the seas, you’ll also run into other players.
You’ll be able to start sailing by heading to the nearest port location. There are several around Gielinor. Ports like Port Sarim will probably become the HUB for it as it’s a good midpoint to travel to places. Next, you’ll need a vessel (boat) to sail, and these will range in size from small to colossal. The smaller versions will be used during the early game, while the greater versions will be a part of the end-game content.
Sailing Ports
To start sailing, you need to head to the nearest port and access one of your ships. There are many ports in the game, for instance, Port Piscarilius, Sarim, Khazard, etc. With the release of the skill, there might be more ports added to OSRS.
For small islands where adding a port makes no sense, there will be a mooring port to safely deck your boat or ship. That way, you can explore any island, big or small, in the game! Oh, and you won’t be able to dock on ports if you haven’t unlocked access to them via quests. For instance, you need to complete the Bon Voyage quest to unlock access to the port on Fossil Island.
Another interesting thing about the upcoming update is that while you can purchase ships, you can also steal them using the Thieving skill, so make sure to level that up too, and be ready!
How will the Navigation Work?
Boats will move with a point-and-click method, the same as how you move your characters. You’ll have to first click on the steering wheel to open an interface and then you can navigate. You can always exit the interface whenever you want to freely roam around and explore!
Since you’ve already watched a bit of ship movies, you might’ve already seen that sailing is not a solo activity, so you’ll have to invite others onboard for a smooth travel.
Sea Sizes
As mentioned above, ships will come in different sizes from small to colossal. Each of them will have a different way of functioning. For instance, the small ones would be ideal to explore shallow areas of the sea, while the colossal ones would be perfect to battle against the deep waters. You’ll be able to own more than one ship, so have one of each or more!
Sea Expansion
Per the news, we have, the sea will be divided into different zones: Shallow, Open, and Deep. These zones can be explored with different ship sizes, wherein the small ones for Shallow, and the colossal ones for Open and Deep.
There has also been a touch on the weather conditions to give you a real feel. For instance, if the wind is heavy, your speed will likely be affected, making it difficult to navigate through the seas. These conditions would only occur in the Open and Deep-Sea zones.
Even the edges of the map that are blacked out will likely be replaced with blue oceans once the skill is released. This is so that players can enjoy a long journey without limitations to where they can travel.
